Spectroscopic Analysis of Milky Way Outer Halo Satellites: Aquarius II and Boötes II

چکیده

In this paper we present a chemical and kinematic analysis of two ultra-faint dwarf galaxies (UFDs), Aquarius II (Aqu~II) \text{Bo\"{o}tes II} (Boo~II), using Magellan/IMACS spectroscopy. We the largest sample member stars for Boo~II (12), red-giant-branch members with metallicity measurements Aqu~II (8). both UFDs, over 80\% targets selected based on $Gaia$ proper motions turned out to be spectroscopic members. order maximize accuracy stellar measurements, remove identified binary RR Lyrae variables. For measure systemic velocity $-65.3 \pm 1.8$ km s$^{-1}$ [Fe/H] = $-2.57^{+0.17}_{-0.17}$. When compared previous these values display $\sim 6$ difference in radial decrease 0.27 dex metallicity. Similarly Boo~II, $-130.4^{+1.4}_{-1.1}$ s$^{-1}$, more than 10 different from literature, almost 1 smaller at $-2.71^{+0.11}_{-0.10}$, dispersion 3 times $\sigma_{v_{\rm hel}} 2.9^{+1.6}_{-1.2}$ s$^{-1}$. Additionally, derive motion parameters model orbits UFDs. Finally, highlight extremely dark matter dominated nature compute J-factor aid searches annihilation. Despite small size close proximity it is an intermediate target indirect detection annihilation due its low corresponding density.

Candidate Milky Way Satellites in the Galactic Halo

Aims. Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR5 photometric data with 120◦ < α < 270◦, 25◦ < δ < 70◦ are searched for new Milky Way companions or substructures in the Galactic halo. Methods. Five candidates are identified as overdensities of faint stellar sources that have color-magnitude diagrams similar to those of known globular clusters or dwarf spheroidal galaxies. The distance to each candidate...

The Aquarius Superclusters II. Spectroscopic and Photometric Data

We present spectroscopic and photometric data for 920 galaxies selected in 68 fields of the Aquarius Cluster Catalog. Typically the 15 brightest candidate members with magnitudes in the range 16 < bJ < 21 were selected for observations, and ∼ 71% turn out to be cluster members. Using the new redshift determinations we assign galaxies to groups and clusters, and by including data from the litera...

The Shape of the Milky Way Halo

The latest Sloan Digital Sky Survey data tracing the tidal stream from the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal (dSph) reveals a bifurcation in the distribution of debris. The branching is caused by the projection of the old trailing and young leading tidal arms of the Sagittarius dSph. The angular difference between the branches is a measure of the precession of the orbital plane and hence the aspheri...

Star Streams in the Milky Way Halo

The last 10-20 years has seen a profound shift in views of how the Galaxy’s halo formed. The idea of a monolithic early collapse of a single system (Eggen, Lynden-Bell and Sandage 1962) has been challenged by observations at high redshift and by cosmological models of structure formation. These findings imply that we should see clear evidence of hierarchical formation processes in nearby galaxi...

A Unique Star in the Outer Halo of the Milky Way

As part of a program to measure abundance ratios in stars beyond 15 kpc from the Galactic center, we have discovered a metal-poor star in the outer halo with a unique chemical signature. We originally identified it in the Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (SEGUE) survey as a distant metal-poor star. We obtained a follow-up spectrum using the Echellette Spectrograph and ...
